The 958, 188,500
DWT tanker BT Alaska was lifted in the Portland Shipyard's
Drydock 4 for blasting and coating of the entire hull. The
topside work included the replacement of the port and starboard
boiler economizers, each weighing 40,000 lbs. (The economizers
use exhaust gases from the fireboxes to pre-heat the feedwater.)
A temporary access cut 15' X 11' was made in the rear of the
deckhouse, the six soot-blower heads and supply lines were
removed, followed by the inlet and outlet valves and all associated
blankets and lagging. Each economizer was then lifted 6" to
clear the foundation combing and removed.

The new units were
skidded into position and installed complete with new casings,
foundations and piping. The access panels were welded back
into place and re-coated. Finally, the finished work was tested
to 1.5 times working pressure to the satisfaction of the ABS
surveyor.
